Broadway Musical #4

By: Michael Russell

Article Word Count: 407

Going to Broadway shows is one of the best ways I know to really enjoy a fun and festive night out that is good for either a date, or a whole family evening. I have loved Broadway musicals for as long as I can remember, and there are new ones coming out every year that are even better. Of course, not every Broadway musical is just the same as all of the others, so you had better do some research before you buy those tickets. After all, tickets for a Broadway musical sure can catch a pretty penny. If you go to a Broadway musical that does not sound like you like it, it will probably ruin the whole night for you. And if you are like me, you probably do not have the change lying around to ruin too many nights in that manner.

Of course, each of us have our favorite Broadway musical, and other ones that we do not like quite as much. I have a friend who can not stand any of the old Rogers and Hammerstein stuff, but loves all kinds of new stuff. I am almost the opposite I do not like the arrangements of almost any Broadway musical from the last ten years that I have heard, but give me South Pacific any given day, and I will watch it and love it, in all probability. I do not think that that means that the stuff that I like is better than that which she does, but we both have to acclimate ourselves to the reality that we each have different needs.

I have always thought that it would be a lot of fun to write a Broadway musical for myself, but there is no point where I have had enough time to do it by myself. But, really, how hard can it be anyway? I mean, you have seen Phantom of the Opera, haven't you. That was a hugely successful Broadway musical, and it really must have taken almost no effort to make it. The same boring theme, over and over, and everyone just eats it up like candy. I may not be able to make rent on my own, but I feel like any halfway decent musician could make a Broadway musical like Phantom of the Opera with only a moderate amount of effort. I guess it is all just marketing and putting in the effort.
